Thesis 1 Undergraduate Project
During my undergraduate studies at AUC to complete my BS in Construction Engineering, I decided to do my thesis project on the topic of "Infrastructure and Environmental Engineering". For this project, a team of 6 members designed the Water Management System and the Transportation Road Networks for the city of El-Bahaa, Saudi Arabia.

The Water Management System constituted the design of a Water Treatment Plant, Water Delivery Network, Wastewater Collection Network, and a Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The Transportation Management System constitute the design of the major highways and the minor roads of the city.

The project was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Ahmed El-Gendy, Dr. Safwan Khedr and Dr. Maram Saudy

The Components of the Project
The items below showcase the different components in which I worked on to complete the infrastructure of El-Bahaa City, Saudi Arabia.
Water Treatment Plant
The design of the water treatment plant started with the water source intake structure, force main, and the design of the individual components of the plant.

The treatment plant' required capacity was calculated for the design period. the units of treatment include the physical sedimentation by the use of clariflocculators, rapid sand filtration and chlorination. The water is then stored and sent away in the distribution network.

Water Distribution Network
After the water is treated, it will need to be distributed to the general public for their everyday use. The concept design for our network was to send the water via transmission lines to 6 ground tanks located at different locations throughout the city. These tanks are located at high elevations in the city so we will need to use high lift pumps to deliver water to these tanks. These tanks will then act as feeders for the entire city.

We divided the city to 6 zones, each zone is fed by one of the tank and the zones were isolated from each other with isolation valves, but in the case of a failure in any of the transmission lines to the tanks these valves can be opened to supply water from and adjacent zone until the problem is fixed.
Wastewater Treatment Plant
The wastewater treats the effluent liquid and then disposes of it in output channels to be either reused again or be transformed to larger body of water where it will be diluted. In order for this toxic wastewater to be environmentally safe and not damage the ecosystem, it needs to be treated. The treatment makes sure that effects of this waste water will be minimal as most of the harmful contaminants will be reduced to make them reach acceptable levels so the discharged water will be environmentally safe. The wastewater can be also treated so that it can be reused again. Wastewater can be treated so that it will be suitable for various levels of agriculture.
